At UMass-Amherst, Norwich kicks off a non-traditional Sunday afternoon match. Despite the change of day Norwich seemed ready to play. In a short time, a minute, Norwich found themselves ahead 5-0, with a try scored by junior scrumhalf Todd Howe. He ran around the defense off a penalty for the score.

At Norwich’s own twenty, freshman hooker Bill Wynn wins one against the head; #8 junior Peter Beamer picks and passes out to the scrumhalf in support who then passes to senior flyhalf Randy Bielski in support. Bielski dashes over fifty meters for the try. Conversion good by Howe. At the fifteen-minute mark of regulation, Norwich increases their lead by twelve.

Norwich’s wall of defense near the in-goal works hard to keep UMass from scoring but finally a try is awarded to UMass.

At the thirty-minute mark the score is Norwich 12-U-mass 5.

Norwich answers by getting back in UMass’s end of the pitch with an outstanding run by senior outside center Sean Burgess. The forwards continue the pressure and score a try off a five-meter scrum. Junior flanker Justin Aubin, in support of #8 Peter Beamer, dives in for the try. At the thirty -six minute mark the conversion by Howe is good. Norwich 19 - UMass-Amherst 5. The half ends.

The only scoring of the second half came at its midway point by Norwich senior Randy Bielski, off a counter-attack from a UMass kick. Randy, with support from senior winger Erik Melanson and senior outside center Sean Burgess to the outside, cut back through the line of defense for the try. Howe’s third conversion of the day brought the score to Norwich 26 - UMass 5.

U-Mass continued to battle back as the second half progressed, but a stubborn hard nosed defense by Norwich denies them a score for 50-minutes of the match. The whistle blows. Final: Norwich 26 - UMass-Amherst 5.

This victory brings Norwich to a 2-0 record in league play. This Saturday Norwich University's Men’s Rugby Club battles the undefeated cadets from West Point, a powerhouse in the league. Kick-off time at the Academy will be at 5:00pm. Three games will be played under the lights.
