Match Report - Army vs. Amherst
29 Oct 2006
The Men’s Army Rugby team traveled north to Amherst College in Massachusetts to compete in their final regular season game. Army looked to finish their regular season undefeated.
Unfortunately, for Amherst they were on the chopping block as Army strove for a perfect regular season. This would give Army a record of 5-0 going into the NERFU playoffs next weekend.
A Side: 60-15
The Amherst starting XV provided the Army ruggers with a solid opponent. We thank them for their valiant effort on Saturday. Army jumped on the scoreboard early with a quick penalty kick from fullback Brendan McCarthy to put Army in the lead early, a lead the Army side would never relinquish. Outside Center Robert Smalls played a solid game during his first A side start. He scored 2 tries and showed much promise in the backline. The Amherst side played a tough game, with talented players at 8-Man, Flyhalf, and Inside Center. These players game Army a good deal of opposition and were successful in scoring 3 tries during the game. Fullback Brendan McCarthy scored a hat-trick with three tries, converted 7 out of 8 kicks, and made 2 penalty kicks. Locke John Breneman had an excellent game as his aggressive nature and quickness proved too much for his opposition. By the end of the second half, the score had come to 60-15 in favor of Army. This game finishes out their regular season campaign and sets Army up for NERFU playoffs next weekend. At the time of this publication, Army’s opponent is TBD.
