This past weekend the Maddogs traveled to Amherst to face the 0-4 UMASS Minutemen. Looking to bounce back from a frustrating defeat at Norwich, the Maddogs took the field with a pronounced intensity.

The game started quickly and despite the Minutemen’s skillful kicking, the forwards were able to drive the ball up the center of the field. This led to a brilliant run and fake by Ben Miller and a score under the posts at the fifteen minute mark. After a successful conversion the dogs stood ahead 7-0. After ten minutes of back and forth play UMASS was able to get on the board with a penalty kick from 30 yards out bringing the score to 7-3.

Play remained back and forth and the Maddogs went into halftime up 7-3.

Second half play resumed with a renewed intensity amongst the Northeastern side. The Dogs continued their excellent defensive pressure and soon stepped up their offensive game as well. After a near breakaway score by Justin Talago, Northeastern scored with a diving try by Mike Pannone over the line bringing the score to 12-3. Another offensive drive led to a Maddog possession from a meter outside the UMASS try-line. Northeastern broke through on a pass by Justin Talago to Frank Houston in the corner making it 19-3.

Midway through the half UMASS was able to take the offensive, scoring their first try and bringing the score to 19-10. Northeastern quickly rebounded and after numerous close calls all day, Talago was able to score a try of his own. Ben Miller’s conversion made the score 26-10.

The Maddogs opened the floodgates offensively in the final minutes on two quick scores by Rob Hunter. A final conversion by Miller brought the score to 38-10 as time expired.
