Harvard Earns 3rd Seed
30 Oct 2006
Harvard beat Norwich 22-7 on Saturday to earn 3rd seed for the Northeast Playoffs.
Playing in dreadful conditions, Harvard played a tight, unattractive game but it proved effective as the result was never in doubt. Harvard's forwards, lead by Blazej Kesy, were again the catalyst for the victory.
Harvard played to the conditions and kept the ball tight to the forwards who often out-muscled their opponents with aggressive driving mauls. Harvard's ability to steal valuable ball at the breakdown also frustrated the home side.
Rob Campbell played an intelligent game at flyhalf. He played to the conditions beautifully and often put his team in good field position with accurate tactical kicking.
He made sure Harvard was playing the game in Norwich's territory, and, with Harvard's backs chasing effectively, Norwich was suffocated into playing a defensive game.
Frenchmen #8 Jean Sebastien Cagnioncle again proved what an asset he is to the Harvard team as he made numerous runs through the Norwich defense. He was rewarded for his efforts by scoring 2 tries and a conversion.
Halfback, Bobby Spang, back in the A side, was very busy around the fringes of the ruck. He provided his backline with accurate service all day. He's not the biggest player on the field but that didn't stop him from mixing it up with the big boys. His tenacity was rewarded with a try after he joined his forward pack during a maul. He helped them drive over the try-line and ended up with the ball in his hands to dot down.
Harvard's first playoff game is next Saturday. There is still confusion over the pairings so Harvard's opponent and venue for the game has yet to be decided.
