Provo, UT--The BYU Cougars rebounded after Wednesday's loss to beat the Falcons of the Air Force Academy 54-10 at home today.
The Cougars were led by captain Steve St. Pierre who tallied a trio of tries on the day and it was St. Pierre who started the scoring in the third minute with a well timed support run off an Air Force turnover.
After St. Pierre's opening try the Cougar's followed up with two tries from prop Mike Sua and flanker Jacob Sohn who both charged into the end zone off separate rolling BYU mauls.
Wing Tim Steflik was good for 2 from 3 conversions and BYU led 19-7 after an AFA try in the 15th minute. An AFA penalty goal edged the Falcons closer but it was the last point they would score in the game.
BYU's backline got off to a good start today as they were able to make 9 nine line breaks while managing field position with the kick. Key to the Cougars backline performance was freshman flyhalf Dylan Lubbe.
"[Dylan] is new to flyhalf," said BYU backs coach Kimball Kjar, "Today it finally clicked for him. He opened things up for others and managed the game well."
After some sloppy play however and lost opportunities from both sides near the end of the first half the Cougars led at half time 19 points to 10.
At the start of the second half it was BYU's captain St. Pierre who again started the scoring as he looped Lubbe in support to race away from the covering AFA defenders.
St. Pierre would score again in the 50th minute and it with some tough conversions Steflik put BYU up 33-10.
In the final 20 minutes BYU's backs got on the board with wing Grant Barnes scoring in the corner and center Apanesa Malani scoring a bevy of tries as well. More conversions by Steflik pushed the final score to 54-10.
"Today was better," BYU head coach David Smyth, "We strung a lot of phases together and used the ball better. Air Force is tough and played hard today. All said though, we probably had our best run of the season today. Now we just need to build on this and keep improving."
The Cougars finish off their regular season with a Friday night tilt against in-state rival Utah State University at 7pm on Helaman Field. BYU's 2nd XV also beat the Falcons' reserves 14-7.
